Introduction

Quince Bangkok Eatery & Bar is situated at the Sukhumvit area that is a few minutes walk away from Phrom Phong BTS. Apart from street food, authentic Thai food and cafes, Bangkok also has some very romantic, posh and classy restaurants and Quince Bangkok Eatery & Bar is one of them.

This romantic fine-dining restaurant is relatively new which was opened in year 2012 and this place generally has some mixed reviews. I fell in love with this place almost immediately. No crowd (on a Sunday night), good food, relaxing setting, great interior and great (but slightly slow) service.

Reservation can be made through email and they can even send a copy of their seasonal menu to you before deciding to make a reservation. The pricing wise is a little to a higher side for Bangkok standard, for example a Grass-fed Striploin cost S$31.60++ and a crab meat pasta cost S$15.20++. But in fact the price is still cheaper than Singapore’s restaurant price.

The eatery is separated into the bar area as shown in my first photo, and the dining area is behind a wall and it’s a different world.

Grass-Fed Beef Striploin with Macaroni Gratin – 790 baht

I ordered this steak that comes with a their baked Macaroni Gratin and I think it’s very worth it at 790 baht.

Some of us may wonder – what does Grass-fed Beef means?

Apparently, the grass-fed cows lived out their entire life roaming freely on grassland instead of being cooped up in feed lot. The grain-fed cows  are rapidly fattened up with grain-based feeds, usually made with a base of soy or corn. while the grass-fed cows gain weight naturally and logically taking more time to reach the weight of a typical grain-fed cow.

Grass-fed cows also get more nutritious food from the nature and not just munching on monoculture lawn cuttings and studies show that grass-fed beef contains more nutrients and less toxins. Therefore, Grass-fed beef are naturally more costly than a regular grain-fed beef.

Ok, back to the review! The light Red Wine Olive Jus goes very well with the steak with a tinge of olive oil and a light aroma of red wine. Strip Loin steak, one of the fine cuts of beef with less fatty tissue, the steak itself is succulent, moist and juicy.  I am quite sure that i won’t be able to get such a steak at Singapore at S$31.00+

On the other hand, the macaroni gratin that comes with the steak actually fall short of my expectation. Apart from the top layer of cheese, the taste of the macaroni is rather plain, and lack of flavor. Such a waste.

Crab Pasta – 380 baht

Quince Bangkok Eatery & Bar hand cut pasta’s texture is a little similar to our 板面 (Chinese Hand-made noodle), but thinner and smoother and topped with Tomato Ragu sauce, chilli and basil. The Tomato Ragu is rather light which makes me feel like finishing the whole plate of pasta even though i am already rather full. And the best part? Big chunks of fresh and succulent crab meat! Crispy Quail Eggs

I also ordered their side dish – Crispy Quail Eggs at 120 baht. This dish is interesting and the taste is rather refreshing. This is my first time trying the potato foam, which has a sweet cream and lightly salted taste. Three crispy breaded quail eggs are added into the foam and topped with thinly-sliced Chorizo. Something that i never tried before and glad that i did.

Conclusion

Quince Bangkok Eatery & Bar is a place that offers you a fine-dining meal at a normal restaurant price. Typically, at Singapore, such a meal with a similar ambiance can easily cost me for more than S$100.00.

The complimentary starter

As for their service, the waiters are attentive and very responsive. When i walked around taking photos, on a camera tripod, nobody bats an eye and allowed me to roam freely around the restaurant without any weird look. I really appreciate this.

The only problem is, the food were served a bit slow, which i figured out that they needed some time to bake the potato gratin that comes with my steak. The location is also rather accessible, with a few minutes walk from Phrom Phong BTS. Overall, i am a very satisfied customer.

Some of you may had noticed that i didn’t order dessert? Yeap, that is because after this meal, i am transiting into a street food mode and will attack the so-call “Bangkok Best Mango Sticky Rice” at Sukhumvit Soi 38. Feel free to read more on this food street from this post.

For those who are looking for a place to celebrate any special occasion, apart from the sky bars in Bangkok, this may be a rather ideal place. If you still have time, then i will probably recommend a massage place – Healthland Asoke, that is only one stop from Phrom Phong BTS. Why not indulge yourself and complete the night with a relaxing couple massage. Their price is very reasonable for it’s class. Huaplachongnonsea Junior ร้านหัวปลาช่องนนทรี (Central World – Bangkok)

Introduction

Since my first trip to Bangkok, i wanted to try out this Huaplachongnonsea (or they called themselves HPC as per their logo), but the main branch is just too far and too inconvenient. Huaplachongnonsea is a non-mainstream non-touristy restaurant that sells traditional Thai food and i have much difficulty looking for it’s information because this place is very little mentioned in Singapore blog or forum. After much research, I realized that they actually have a branch at Central World! Apparently, the branch that i am visiting is a “Junior” version. I have no idea what is the difference but i keep my finger-crossed that their food are as good as the non-junior branch like how some people described online. My must-eat for Huaplachongnonsea will be their signature Hot Pot Tom Yum Soup (they even use the hot pot in their logo) , Roasted Pork Cheek and the highlight – Thai-style Curry Crab Meat!

Hot Pot Tom Yum Soup

Surprisingly, i didn’t manage to get a really good Tom Yum Soup in Bangkok. If you do have a good Tom Yum Soup recommendation in Bangkok, feel free to share! I heard Ban Khun Mae and Nara Thai serves pretty good Tom Yum Soup. But this Hot Pot Tom Yum Soup from Huaplachongnonsea manage to satisfy my craving for a good soup!

This is the coconut milk version and note that it is slightly oily. So what is better than a pot of spicy and sour Tom Yum Soup? A pot of piping hot, spicy and sour Tom Yum Soup!!

I’ll definitely give my vote to Huaplachongnonsea for the most satisfying Tom Yum Soup in Bangkok till date. Large portion, big fresh prawn, piping hot soup, flavorful, spicy and spices infused Tom Yum Soup, and at a reasonable price of 270 baht!


Roasted Pork Cheek

This is one disappointment for me as I was expecting a char-grilled pork cheek with a little burnt on the surface but there isn’t any. This pork cheek has a tinge of sweet coconut taste which don’t exactly enhance the taste in my opinion. This also has something to do with the way the chef cuts it, which makes the pork cheek rather tough on the teeth. I thought a good way of preparing the pork cheeks is to slice them into thin slices.

Salted Fish Kai Lan

Best Kai Lan dish ever! But provided you like salted fish. The whole dish is overpowered with the aroma of salted fish which makes it rather salty and goes very well with white rice. I can finish the whole bowl of rice with just the vegetable alone. But a word of caution, this dish is really salty, but in a way that I favor.

Curry Crab Meat

This is my favorite dish of Huaplachongnonsea. We have chilli crab in Singapore and the Thais have curry crab! I did a search on instagram for this restaurant and apparently this is one of the most popular dishes in Huaplachongnonsea, which i made this a must-order for my visit. Like the Hot Pot Tom Yum, this cost about 270 baht if i remembered correctly.

Best thing I like about this dish is – there is no need to de-shell the crab as the kitchen had already removed all the shells and stir-fry chunks of fresh crab meat into their special curry gravy. How I wish I have some fried man tou (steamed bun) to go with it.

Some may find this dish a little too oily but I heck it since it’s an overseas trip and won’t get a chance to eat this when I return to Singapore. Like how we Singaporeans say it – “Just whack only!”. I will be back for more of this.

Conclusion

I looked around Huaplachongnonsea and noticed there are not much foreigners in the restaurant. Almost all the guests are locals. Actually even for me, if I don’t already know this place, I probably won’t set foot into this place as there are just too many other tourist-friendly-looking restaurants at Central World.

The total damage is about S$36.00 for Hot Pot Tom Yum Soup, Roasted Pork Cheek, Curry Crab, Salted Fish Kai Lan, Rice, which is reasonably enough for four people. The price seems pretty reasonable for a restaurant located at Central World. If you ask me, I will visit this place again for their Curry Crab Meat and Hot Pot Tom Yum Soup and and other dishes as well.

Thip Samai (Phra Nakhon – Bangkok) : “Best Pad Thai in Bangkok”

Introduction

A quick Google of ‘Bangkok best Pad Thai’ will return quite some results for ‘Thip Samai’. The location of Thip Samai is rather off from the main shopping district but is it worth the travel for the ‘best Pad Thai in bangkok’ ? This is my second visit to Thip Samai. From the Grand Palace area (specifically from The Deck@ Arun Residence), i took a tuk tuk that took me less than five minutes to reach.

Same as my previous visit, comparing to Sabx2 Wanton Noodle which is mostly filled with tourist, Thip Samai is mostly filled with locals.

Thip Samai basically offers many variations of Pad Thai (glass noodle version, with extra prawn, wrapped in omelet or even a version without the rice noodle). Yes, and one more thing that I like about Thip Samai is for it’s cleanliness of the shop. Eating in a dirty eatery is the last thing to worry about at Thip Samai.

Pad Thai

I ordered the omelet version and the prawn version. I remembered the prawn version was a little sweet for Singaporean taste the previous time but this time it’s perfect.

At Thip Samai, every plate of Pad Thai is freshly prepared and served piping hot to your table, and it comes comes with a portion of bean sprouts, fresh lime and chives.

Adding the lime, chilli flakes and crushed peanut is a must to bring out the flavour of the noodle. I tend not to judge a food’s taste by Singapore standard, and as we know, Bangkok food tends to be sweeter. So for those who don’t appreciate sweet savory food, you may find this Pad Thai, or any other Thai food in Bangkok, not as appealing to you.

Their Pad Thai is more to a dryer version but the noodle is well-coated with the tamarind & fish sauce and i can taste the sweetness and the fragrance of the Pad Thai with every mouthful. This dish is especially enjoyable with added dried chilli flakes.

I requested for no bean sprout but they totally excluded everything except the noodle, egg and prawn. LOL.

Orange Juice

If it is your first time visiting Thip Samai, you can try their freshly squeezed Orange Juice. What’s so special about this orange juice? They don’t just add pulp into the juice, but chunks of Orange fruit. That is why they specifically instruct that the juice must be finished within the same day.

Braised Pork Bee Hoon

Facing the road, on the left side of Thip Samai lies a roadside stall call “Tee Yen-Ta-4”. This little stall was crowded and filled with patrons which made me really curious about the food that they are selling. On every table, the people are either eating a bowl of Yong Tau Fu Soup or something that looks like Stew Pork Bee Hoon. So i took the plunge and ordered a portion for myself too!

This Bee Hoon tasted really homely, like the kind of Bee Hoon that i had at my Primary School Canteen. The soup is surprisingly good, but some may say probably it’s because of the MSG. The soft-stew pork and the turnip goes pretty well with the soup and bee hoon.

Conclusion

I think it’s not hard to guess my verdict for Thip Samai since this is my return visit to this place. Thip Samai may not easily be the best of the best Pad Thai in Bangkok, since there should be ten over thousands of stalls selling Pad Thai in Bangkok. But when a place sells Pad Thai and just Pad Thai alone, and manage to prosper with almost full house during my both visits even at such an inconvenient location, this says something about the quality.

Moreover, what is a Bangkok trip without trying out their “Bangkok Best Pad Thai”? If i’m coming back to Bangkok in future, i will try to visit this place again.

Directions and Map

I don’t see any MRT or BTS station nearby. For both times, i took a cab down and the cab driver managed to locate this eatery. From google map, apparently it appears that it is within walking distance from The Grand Palace (about 15 minutes) but i never took the walk so if anyone tried walking from The Palace to Thip Samai, feel free to share with me.
