Seoul Street Food Found at Myeongdong

Apart from indulging in restaurant food, what is a Seoul Food trip without immersing yourself in their street food culture. There are many places that sell street food but my favourite one is at Myeongdong district.

At Myeongdong, you also can find such shop, almost selling every kind of street food

Exit from Myeongdong MRT at Exit 5, 6, 7, 8 and a busy Myeongdong shopping street will be presented right before you. It’s an area where you can find everything you need for skin care and choices of restaurants and cafes are excessive. I do not have the exact location of these street food stalls but just walk around that area. These stalls are not hard to spot.

Myeongdong – Korean Grilled Cuttlefish

This is one of my favourites. I had it the first time I visited Seoul and i made it a point to come back to the same stall again. At W$4000 (S$4.80), it’s not cheap but still  reasonable for a whole cuttlefish.

The frozen cuttlefish is freshly grilled by pressing it against a top and bottom electric grill. The originally flat cuttlefish is fluffed up after passing through the shredder. The piping-hot shredded cuttlefish is chewy but not rubbery and unlike most dried cuttlefish, the texture is much more enjoyable and is not straining on one’s jaw.

Myeongdong – Steamed Egg Muffin (GyeRan Bbang 계란 빵)

This gotta be the most seductive street food during a cold season. Hot steam is sprouting from the air vent of the pan, keeping the muffin soft and moist.

The cake itself is steaming hot and moist and i love the texture but i thought it is a little lacking in flavor. It’s suppose to be a little sweeter. The egg yolk is fully cooked with no additional flavoring.

Myeongdong – Tteokbokki (떡볶이 Spicy Rice Cake)

Tteokbokki, without doubt is the most popular street food in Seoul. This Korean soft rice cake needs no introduction. Most of them are cooked in spicy sweet sauce and serve in small bowl or cup. Unlike Singapore’s version, Seoul’s version are mostly spicy so do know what to expect. This cost about S$5 even in Singapore’s foodcourt but you can get a portion for less than S$2.00 in Seoul.

Myeongdong – Fries Coated Hot Dog Bun

This is one hell of a street food. It’s a layer of fries, coated on a layer of bread, wrapping itself around a stick of hot dog and topped with Ketchup.

The idea seems sinfully good, but i suggest to eat this only when you are sure it’s freshly fried. Else, the fries exterior will taste rather soggy and greasy and you will end up scrapping away the fries and just finish the dog.

Myeongdong – Eomuk Guk (어묵국 Fish Cake Soup)

This is the best street food during winter season because the stick of fish cake comes with a cup of anchovies soup to warm your body and soul.

The texture of their fish cake is soft and less springy than our Singapore’s version and it’s really tasty. Some people may complain about the MSG in the soup though.

Myeongdong – Dong Pang 동빵 – W$700

Poo pancake (Dong Pang) is very popular in Seoul recently. There was one particular stall that is really popular with really long queues. I saw this similar one at Myeongdong and although it may not be the best, this is pretty good too.

Initially I thought the texture will be similar to the Japanese Pancake (the one on the shape of a fish) but it’s actually more moist and texture is somewhat similar to a sponge cake.

The exterior crust is really crispy and it comes with many flavours like Vanilla, Cheese, Chocolate and Red Bean.

Myeongdong – Hotteok (호떡)

Hoddeok is one of Korea’s most popular street food. It’s freshly press-fried on a frying pan where the exterior is fried to crisp and is sometimes served in a paper cup.

There are a variety of fillings and the most traditional one is made with brown sugar, honey, chopped peanuts, and cinnamon. The paste is soften during the frying process and turn into a flowy semi liquid form. 

Hotteok  is very enjoyable with a crispy exterior with a flavour packed filling. The sweetness is above average though.

Conclusion

I believe what I had tried is only the tip of the ice berg as the variety of their food is just astonishing. Induldging in Seoul’s street food culture is definitely one of my best Seoul experience and will continue to do so when info visit Seoul.

Myeongdong has a diverse range of street food and they only come alive from evening time. Remember to leave some space in your stomach in you are visiting the Myeongdong district.

And for the ladies, remember to bring your shopping bags. The variety of skin care products you can find in Myeongdong is crazy. However please be careful with your belongings as it is really crowded on a weekend evening.

Edae – Grilled Chicken Skewer

Among all street food, this is my favourite. Succulent Grilled Chicken with juicy leek. Read more about this chicken skewer here

Dongdaemum – Omelette toast

This is not found at Myeongdong but it was near to my hostel at Dongdaemun. You can visit this place if you happen to stay around this area.

Every piece of toast and omelette are freshly prepared. A layer of fresh butter is applied onto the hot plate and the bread are toasted over it.

The thick chunky omelette has a mix of carrot, green onion, onion and each piece is meticulously prepared by the lady.

The omelette is finished by sprinkling sugar over it. Trust me. The sugar version is nicer and more unique. I tried both. They are open as early as 6 am in the morning and is still operating at 12 midnight.

Other Street Food

Apart from Myeongdong, there is also a good section of Korean Snacks at the food department of Lotte Departmental Store. You may also want to swing by if you are planning to visit them. The selections there are quite amazing as well.

Introduction

Egglet Ji Dan Zai (鷄蛋仔/鸡蛋仔)  is one of the most popular street snacks in Hong Kong that is mainly made from sugar batter made with egg, sugar, flour and evaporated milk. This batter is poured into a special two-sided pan and the batter is heated to crisp in the shape of mini egg. Egglet (Ji Dan Zai) literally means mini chicken egg as what the appearance suggest.

Having tried a couple of Egglets off the street, i decided to search for one that is popular among the locals. There are many stalls selling Egglet in Hong Kong and one of the more reputable one is the 利強記北角雞蛋仔, or people just simply calls it North Point Egglet (Bei Jiao Ji Dan Zai).

It’s quite easy to miss but the smell of the egg fragrance helped me to locate this stall

They have a few branches (nine as per openrice), but i read that their Tsim Sha Tsui and the main branch at North Point are the better one. There is a short walking distance from the North Point MTR to this stall and the egg fragrance can be detected even before reaching the stall. If not for the queue, this Egglet stall is almost unnoticeable. If you look closely, you can see that the the whole wall outside the stall is decorated with newspaper articles on North Point Egglet, with some labelling this little stall for selling the best Egglet in Hong Kong.

The Egglet

Every piece of Egglets are freshly prepared and each piece is served piping hot from the pan. Their Egglet is exceptional crispy while the interior remains fluffy and soft.

One thing to note is it’s noticeably less sweet than a typical Egglet found in Hong Kong which one gets to savour the natural fragrance of the eggs. In fact, some people complained that the Egglet can be sweeter.

Fresh and hot

There are no fanciful flavour and everyone just simply state the quantity of Egglet when they order. I was actually really stuffed then and i told myself that I will not finish the whole thing but It’s so addicitve and before I know it, the paper bag is already empty. To me, the texture of the Egglet is more important than anything else and North Point Egglet hit that right on the spot.  It’s priced at a still-reasonable HK$15.

Top and bottom exterior is cripsy while the center is fluffy and soft. Some said that it can be sweeter though.

Conclusion

Although preparing an Egglet looks easy, the control of the timing and the temperature of the pan is much tougher than it looks. It simply takes too much effort and requires a lot of experience to do up a good Egglet. If i compare Bei Jiao Ji Dan Zai to Singapore’s Eggette, none is even close.

My favourite Egglet was from a stall at Mongkok’s Garden Street. It’s not very well known but I thought their Egglet is the best I had so far. To be honest, the taste between that and North Point Egglet is actually comparable in term of texture and taste.

Bei Jiao Ji Dan Zai is slightly better in term of the egg fragrance and each piece is piping hot and freshly prepared only upon ordering, while the one i had was already pre-made and placed at their counter.

2. Walk straight against the traffic until you come to a cross junction

3. Do not cross the junction and turn to you right and you should see  Bei Jiao Ji Dan Zai (North Point Egglet)

Best Bangkok Mango Sticky Rice @ Sukhumvit Soi 38 (And Wanton Noodle)

Introduction

Sukhumvit Soi 38 is an ordinary road by day and transformed into a food street by night. There are about twenty stalls here that offers quite a variety of Bangkok street food here like Papaya Salad, Skewered BBQ Meat, Duck Noodle, Fresh Fruit Smoothies, Pad Thai, the famous Mango Sticky Rice and Thai-style Wanton Noodle.

Sukhumvit Soi 38 is directly across Thong Lor BTS station Exit 4. Apparently the Pad Thai there has quite some reputation but we did not have the stomach after having the famous “Best Bangkok Mango Sticky Rice” and the Thai-style Wanton Noodle. I always wanted to do a comparison between the SabX2 Wanton Noodle and something else so this is the one.

Bangkok Best Mango Sticky Rice (Khao Neeo Mamuang)

Everyone surely will have a mango sticky rice or two in Bangkok, but what about the “Best Mango Sticky Rice”? Apparently, the one with such reputation is not from a restaurant, not from an eatery and definitely not from a cafe but this road side stall at Sukhumvit Soi 38. Turn right at the blue and white umbrella at the foreground as shown in the above pic to locate this stall. Remember it’s something something something 38. LOL. Any helpful soul to translate?

I was pretty curious what actually contributed to this roadside stall for their “Best Bangkok Mango Sticky Rice” reputation. I can’t be sure is this the Best Mango Sticky Rice, but this is one of the best i had so far. I had reviewed Mango Tango previously and talked about how fresh and sweet their mangoes are, surprisingly, this street food stall’s are as good, if not slightly better.

But i have to emphasis that it’s still a personal preference for individual’s criteria for a “good mango sticky rice”.  Some mango sticky rice’s are good for their coconut sauce while the glutinous rice don’t add much flavor to the overall taste except for it’s texture. This glutinous rice is flavorful, with sweet blend of slightly salty and sweet taste and the aromatic coconut sauce completes the whole package. Good mango, good coconut sauce, good rice and a bonus – good price.

Crab Meat Wanton Noodle

Apparently the wanton noodle is one of the popular stalls which has quite some good reputation online. The unique thing for this  Thai-style wanton noodle is they added fresh crab meat as the ingredient. I can’t remember the exact price but i remember it is not expensive at all. There is a good local crowd queuing at this stall when i visited.

The noodle dry is springy and the texture is quite delightful. There is a tinge of shallot and pork lard fragrance upon having my first bite. The fresh crab meat don’t exactly affects the taste much but is a nice addition to the ingredient. Unlike the Sabx2 Wanton Noodle ,this noodle is less flavorful and i can taste the sweetness of the noodle. I would like this version if i am looking for something lighter, but I thought that the SabX2 Wanton Noodle fairs better than this in term of the overall taste.

The soup is also lightly flavored by the Chye Poh (preserved radish) and the soup is pretty good and i actually prefers the soup version to the dry. I normally prefers a dry noodle over a soup noodle anytime but not this one.

Conclusion

This is my first visit to Sukhumvit Soi 38 but definitely will not be my last. I thought it is an awesome place to indulge in Bangkok’s Street Food Culture to try out the wide variety of street food here.

I would love to try out the Pad Thai and it’s a pity i didn’t have it for my last visit. If you are visiting here, don’t be like me, for visiting this place with an almost-full stomach.

Bangkok Good Food – My Bangkok Food Itinerary

Intoduction

I went to Bangkok a couple of times and each time, i spent quite some time researching where is a good hunt for good food in Bangkok.  I thought it would be useful to consolidate all my food itineraries into a single post instead and hope that this post will come handy to like-minded food lovers.

Street Food and Cheap Eat

(1.) Sabx2 Wanton Noodle  This famous Wanton Noodle is very popular among Singaporeans. Many returned to this humble stall for their crispy-pork-lard-filled noodle and it’s location is just situated opposite Singaporean’s favorite shopping mall – The Platinum Mall. Some are also hooked by their really tender braised pork knuckle.


(2.) Chatuchak Pork Chop Bun The pork chop bun stall is situated at  Chatuchak Area 22 Soi 4. Their tender Pork Chops are freshly grilled right in front of their stall, wrapped in fluffy white steamed bun.

(3.) Chatuchak Coconut Ice Cream The famous must-eat coconut ice-cream at Chatuchak. The ice-cream comes with two toppings and the stall owner offers free coconut juice to go with the ice-cream.

(4.) Sukhumvit Soi 38 Food Street – “Bangkok Best Mango Sticky Rice” Surprisingly, this street food stall earned it’s reputation of “Bangkok Best Sticky Rice”. I thought that indeed this is one of the best that i had in Bangkok, but not sure is it Bangkok Best. The whole street of Sukhumvit Soi 38 is transformed into a Food Street at night that operates up to 2 am at night or later. With about twenty street food stalls here, it is definitely a good place to indulge in Bangkok’s street food culture!

Cafe

(1.) Roast Coffee and Eatery One of the must-go brunch place in Bangkok. Situated at Thong Lor area. Serves pretty good all-day  breakfast, main courses and award winning hand-crafted coffee. I love to chill out, relax at this cafe while watching the time roll away.

(2.) Mr Jones Orphanage Just visiting this cafe for it’s interior design is well worth the travel. This is a cafe that pops right out from a story book, with the interior decorated with giant ceiling clocks, carousel, pastries-filled kitchen and an attic dining area. Also situated at Thong Lor area, you can just pop by to this cafe after having a meal at Roast Coffee & Eatery. With a wide variety of cakes and desserts, surely one will be able to satisfy your sweet tooth.

(3.) After You Dessert Cafe This is a very popular dessert cafe in Bangkok. Long queue is formed outside this cafe during peak hours and is famous for their Shibuya Thick Toast. It comes in many variations like Nutella Shibuya Toast, Chocolate Shibuya Toast or even Melted Cheddar Cheese Shibuya Toast.

(4.) Mont Nom Sod Mont Nom Sod is situated at MBK level two that specialise in Toast and Milk. Mont Nom Sod’s bread is nothing like our square toast which the texture became a little tough after toasting, or the really crispy style like Ya Kun’s. Their toast is crispy on the surface and fluffy soft on the inside. There are many options for the toast spread, like Coconut Custard, Condensed Milk, Chocolate, Taro spread, Pumpkin spread and Corn spread. A good place to have a quick bite before heading off for the crazy shopping regime again.

Dessert Place

(1.) Mango Tango Mango Tango is a dessert place that specialises in Mango dessert at Siam Square Soi 5. They are well known for their fresh mango and mango juice at a very reasonable price.

Thai Cuisine

(1.) Soi Polo Fried Chicken This fried chicken has a reputation of Bangkok Best Fried Chicken and it’s known as the hidden gem in Bangkok. People agreed that the fried condiments that were scattered generously over the tender fried chicken are really unique and it greatly enhanced the taste of the chicken. The location is not exactly the easiest to locate but well worth to try out this unique style of fried chicken.

(2.) Thip Samai Pad Thai Has a reputation of “Bangkok Best Pad Thai”. They sell good Pad Thai and sell only Pad Thai. Each plate of Pad Thai are prepared right in front of you and served piping hot, and frequent by a lot of their locals.

(3.) Huaplachongnonsea Junior Situated at Central World, i consider Huaplachongnonsea Junior as a relatively cheap eat at a very convenient location. Their speciality are their hotpot tom yum soup as well as their curry crab meat. I enjoyed their two signature dishes and will be going back for more in the future. This is a very non-mainstream non-touristy restaurants that are frequent mostly by locals during my last visit.

Romantic Restaurant / Restaurant with a view

(1.) The Deck @ Arun Residence Great place to chill after visiting the Grand Palace, Wat Arun or Wat Pho. This restaurant is strategically situated across Wat Arun. This is one of the best place to catch a glance or take a good photo of Wat Arun during set sun or watch Wat Arun glows in a golden light in contrast to the night sky.

(2.) Quince Bangkok Eatery & Bar Quince, a newly opened restaurant in the second quarter of year 2012, offers a fine dining menu at a typical Singapore restaurant price. It’s located at Sukhumvit 45 which is a couple minutes walk away from Phrom Phong BTS station. The amazing interior provides a great ambiance for couple to indulge in a romantic evening dinner.

Conclusion

Bangkok Street Food – Chatuchak Market (Street Food – Pork Chop and Coconut Ice Cream)

Chatuchak Weekend Market (Street Food – Pork Chop and Coconut Ice Cream)

Before starting my post, here is a photo of the coolest biker dog that i saw in Chatuchak Market’s Pet Section:

Chatuchak is the ultimate destination for street food lover. I took a train and alight at Mo Chit BTS station and it’s walking distance to Chatuchak Market (or JJ Market). You can also alight at Kamphaenpetch MRT station.

I am more than happy to start my eating spree in Chatuchak, but, i have a specific objective this time. I need to fill my tummy with two specific food – pork chop bun and the famous coconut ice cream. Pork chop bun? Yes. Super tender Pork chop bun in Chatuchak. So the next question is where?

Coconut ice cream

Coconut ice-cream is very commonly found in Chatuchak market but where exactly is the authentic coconut ice-cream? Accordingly to reliable source, i must look for the stall that is in between section 1 and section 2 that is near Kamphaenpetch MRT. You know that you are at the right stall when the crowd at this particular stall is more than usual.

I had my first serving with corn and nata de coco and shortly after,I found myself having the second serving with atap chee and roasted peanut! I thought the coconut fragrance of the ice-cream goes very well with the slightly char-roasted peanut and adds on a crunchy texture to it.

Previously the flag toothpick is a symbol of authenticity but apparently i was told that many stalls also ‘enhanced’ their ice-cream with flag toothpicks. This coconut ice-cream cost 35 baht (less than S$1.45) with two selected toppings.

You can imagine what i can buy with S$1.45 in Singapore. Some stalls in Singapore is selling S$2.50 or more for fresh coconut juice. And now on top of the free coconut juice ( I got four cups of juice from the auntie), I got to eat the coconut meat, get a scoop of coconut ice-cream, and two more toppings of my choices. Plus the hot weather in Bangkok, I welcome a ice cold scoop of coconut ice-cream anytime!

There is a stall selling Iced Thai Milk Tea near the Ice Cream stall. It’s really thirst quenching but it’s REALLY sweet.

Pork chop bun

The pork chop bun stall is situated at  Area 22 Soi 4. This stall is not easily noticeable but not tough to find. I just need to slow down my pace while in Soi 4 of Area 22 and peek into smaller lanes at the side. Just keep in mind to look out for this signage:

I stood in front of the stall for a while, staring at the pork chops and i think i was salivating. The pork chops were freshly grilled in the stall.

They sell their pork chop by weight, therefore to order, you just tell them the weight you desire, and purchase the bun separately and they will wrap it for you.  I was so happy that i didn’t take note of the price of the pork chop. I only remember i bought three buns with total of 200g of pork chops.  The bun itself cost 10 baht.

The photo of my pork chop’s surface looks a little dry, as you can see that the bun had absorbed all the oil into it which makes the bun really tasty. This portion should be about 70g then. Some locals bought 200g of pork chop to go with one bun.

As for the pork chop, i can simply describe it in one word – tender. Actually i am still not able to understand how they make it so soft and tender.  I believe they should have used lean meat for pork chop which is tougher in nature. It felt a little like i am almost eating Kong Ba Bao (braised pork belly bun), just a little tougher, and that the pork is grilled.

I had also tried another interesting item from their stall. They call it the “Chilli Ginger Salted Egg”. It’s sold in individual cup with a piece of salted egg on it at 30 baht. This chilli minced meat is quite spicy with a lot of lemon grass. Skip this if you hate lemon grass or very spicy food. I would say this is interesting, but not a must-try.

Other Stuff from Chatuchak

Section 47/2 – Freshly Toasted Bread Cracker

I also came by this stall that sells Toasted Bread Cracker. There are a few flavours like Black Sasame, Garlic and Butter Sugar and only cost 35 baht for a small packet. I find it especially enjoyable to get a pack that is freshly toasted from the oven. I had the Garlic flavor and it taste almost like our Garlic bread, but much more crisper.

Pet Section

You got to punch a wall to feel manly again after visiting Chatuchak’s Pet section. All these furry friends are too cute and are running around freely in a open-top cage and feel free to play with them. However you got to be more tactical if you wish to take photos as momento as many stalls do not allow photography.

Frozen Banana dipped in molten chocolate with toppings. This thing is rather hard. Try it only if you have good set of teeth.
